The Troop 16x9 trailer from a widescreen Cinemascope release
TheTroop - a Royal premiered film
Following its Royal premiere at Bafta in 1999, Her Majesty The Queen requested a loan copy of The Troop film to screen to her family and friends at Christmas.
Shot in 35mm widescreen Panavision by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Alex Thomson BSC, The Troop features the voice of Oscar-winning actor Sir John Mills, and a sweeping musical score performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
TheTroop:Redux 2017 & The Academy
Film projection is fast becoming obsolete, so the time has come to preserve this epic heritage production for the digital age. Following a screening at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in Hollywood, the Academy selected The Troop as an official case study for film-to-digital transfer and reformatting using the Academy Color Encoding System, ACES.
A Hollywood restoration
Working with best-of-breed technology, The Troop will soon be restored to the very highest cinema standards. Not only will the film be scanned and regraded to the highest possible quality, but the film’s epic soundtrack is also being rebuilt from the ground up by composer Julian Scott, who is working with Dolby Atmos technology to provide amazing new dimensions in theatrical audio.

A global ACES case study
Following its digital redux The Troop will become an official Academy case study for the digital reformatting, restoration, and repurposing of film-originated productions. TheTroop:Redux will then be presented at key film industry events worldwide, including events hosted by the Academy. TheTroop:Redux project is also being supported by key film industry suppliers and experts to ensure the optimum end result.
Academy making-of documentary
The Academy has commissioned an Academy Originals ‘making-of’ documentary about the project.
The King’s Troop
The subject of The Troop is The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, the spectacular horse-drawn artillery battery that fires gun salutes on Royal and State occasions. With its immaculately turned out horses, traditional Napoleonic-era uniforms, and original WW1-era artillery pieces, the Troop is renowned for exceptional equestrian skill. It can be seen galloping into action and firing gun salutes on the great State occasions, representing the epitome of teamwork, reliability, skill, and expertise.
